LanCall

Chat at festivals and campsites with no signal

For the moments when the mobile network is jammed or simply isn’t there.

The short version

  • Install LanCall and add each other while you still have a connection.
  • With no network at all, keep Wi‑Fi on. iPhones running LanCall connect directly, the way AirDrop does.
  • The direct link reaches roughly AirDrop range, so it’s for keeping in touch with people near you, not across a whole festival site.

Get LanCall on the App Store

Before you go

  1. Install LanCall on everyone’s iPhone before you leave home. Festival and campsite connections are often too slow to download apps.
  2. Open it, choose a display name and allow Local Network access.
  3. Add each other: tap Add under Nearby, or scan each other’s QR code.

When you’re there

  1. Keep Wi‑Fi turned on. You don’t need to join a network.
  2. Open LanCall to message or call someone nearby. Messages to someone out of reach wait on your phone and send themselves when you’re close again with LanCall open.
  3. If the campsite has Wi‑Fi that lets phones see each other, LanCall uses it and can reach further.

Range: what to expect

Phone to phone, LanCall reaches about as far as AirDrop. That’s usually the next tent, the same bar or the same area in front of a stage, and less in a dense crowd. It won’t reach the other side of a large festival. Plan a meeting point as a backup.

Questions

Is this a mesh network?

No. LanCall connects two iPhones directly or over the same Wi‑Fi. Messages don’t hop through other people’s phones, which is why range is limited to roughly AirDrop distance.

Can strangers message me?

People you haven’t added can only send a request, and nothing rings until you accept. You can also turn off “Visible to nearby phones” so you don’t appear under Nearby. See Safety.

Does it work on Android?

No. LanCall is for iPhone only.
