LanCall

Chat on a cruise ship without an internet package

A guide for families and groups who split up around the ship.

The short version

  • Install LanCall on everyone’s iPhone before you sail, and add each other.
  • On board, keep Wi‑Fi on. You don’t need to buy the ship’s internet package.
  • If the ship’s network lets phones reach each other, LanCall works across the ship. If it doesn’t, the phones connect directly when they’re close, roughly within AirDrop range.

Get LanCall on the App Store

Before you sail

  1. Install LanCall on every iPhone in your group while you still have internet.
  2. Open it, choose a display name and allow Local Network access.
  3. Add each other at home or at the terminal: tap Add under Nearby, or scan each other’s QR code.

On board

  1. Turn off mobile data or switch on airplane mode to avoid expensive maritime roaming, then turn Wi‑Fi back on.
  2. Join the ship’s Wi‑Fi if you can do so without buying a package. Many ships let you join for free and only charge for internet.
  3. Open LanCall and send a message. A contact who’s reachable shows your message as Delivered.

Why it works in some places and not others

Some ship networks let devices on the same Wi‑Fi talk to each other. Then LanCall reaches your group across the decks. Many networks block this (it’s called client isolation). Then LanCall falls back to a direct phone-to-phone link, which works when you’re fairly close: the same restaurant, lounge or pool deck. We can’t promise how a particular ship’s network is set up.

If a message says it’s waiting, you don’t have to resend it. It sends itself when you’re both in reach with LanCall open.

Questions

Will this use my phone plan at sea?

No. LanCall only uses Wi‑Fi. Turn off mobile data or use airplane mode with Wi‑Fi on, and nothing goes over the maritime network.

Does my whole group need it?

Yes. Everyone you want to reach needs LanCall on their own iPhone. It’s a one-time purchase.

Can I call someone on shore?

No. LanCall connects iPhones near each other. It doesn’t use the internet, so it can’t reach people back home.
